Supporting better fisheries
We aim to support better fisheries by, for example:
Directly supporting fishermen who are reducing damage to the environment and fishing using methods which, if widely deployed, will improve the status of fish stocks. This may also mean choosing fish by category rather than species, and/or by sourcing locally and seasonally.
Ensuring the quality of fish available to chefs as a result of supporting better fishing practices is very high. This might mean better treatment on board, or shortening the supply chain to get fish to the restaurant as soon as possible. Better quality provides a powerful incentive to chefs to source their fish via this route.
Establishing a fair trading relationship, for aspects such as price (absolute amount and/or a long term agreement on price that smoothes out lows and highs) and supply route. This means – without being naive – listening to the fishermen about what needs to happen for them to be able to supply us with fish that meet our sustainability and quality criteria.
