Evaluating selectivity

When Pisces-RFR evaluates a fishery, the selectivity a fishery is judged against a five point scale:

  1. Bullet1. Worst practice … unselective; high proportion of discards, or otherwise undesirable characteristics, highly detrimental to discarded species;

  2. Bullet2. Poor … poor selectivity has potentially significant impact on species, although none believed to be in danger of local extinction. No credible remedial measures have been set;

  3. Bullet3. Transitional …poor selectivity is of concern, but credible remedial measures have been implemented, although at an early stage to judge results;

  4. Bullet4. Good … high selectivity, positive measures (if necessary) have been successfully implemented as part of a credible management plan. There may be some discards or other issues, but widely believed to have minor significance, and subject to monitoring;

  5. Bullet5. Best practice, the goal … catches only fish intended for landing.
