Slow Food were the first to support us. In 2004 they funded us (and others!) go to
Terra Madre, a gathering of 1,200 World Food Communities in Turin. Our ad-hoc party included Chris Bean (that’s Chris with Caroline on the
Terra Madre stage) and our vision began to take concrete form. We agreed to go out on Chris’s boat,
liked what we saw, and turned from talking to getting ‘cleaner, better, fairer’ fish onto people’s plates.
Slow Food must have liked us as too, because they invited us back to the launch of Slow Fish, in 2005 in Genoa, and we contributed to an issue of Snail Mail, (Slow Food UK’s magazine) devoted to fishing. Then – for Terra Madre 2006 – Slow Food funded the Beans, ourselves, and also Paul Joy and Stephen Potter, of the Hastings Fishermen’s Protection Society and Hastings Borough Council. That was our introduction to Sussex fishermen.
Last but not least are the local Slow Food ‘conviva.’ Silvija Davidson, of
Slow Food London, is our local link. Local Slow Food
Convivia are a wonderful venue for local fishers, restaurants and all with an interest in good food to become tastefully acquainted with the issues and possibilities!
